What is PPL?

March 1, 2007

Ever wonder how nightclubs, bars or restaurant can play music legally?
Well it’s simple, you just need to buy a Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) licence. The licence cover the copyright fee and allow to play mechanically recorded music.
Nightclubs owner who think that they get away with it are facing serious legal actions, such as a ban of playing music, quite logical after all. That’s what happens to Mr R Hussain (owner of Bracknell’s Shikara nightclub) who was told by the justice that he wasn’t using the proper license. He faces a heavy fine and even prison if he doesn’t come back on the legal side. Read about this story here.
If you are an artist and have your music played in the media (TV, radio, clubs…), you need to register to the PPL organisation in order to receive your royalties. Get more information at www.ppluk.com

What is “Creative Commons”

February 15, 2007

Creative Commons is an organisation which provides copyright laws, similar to “some rights reserved”.
Instead of using “all right reserved”, producers, artist or any other person who wish to protect his work can use a “Creative Commons” license if they want to partly protect their creations.
There four main categories:

Attribution:
You can distribute, copy, display or perform the creation as long as you give credit to the author.

Non-commercial:
You can distribute, copy, display or perform the creation but not for a commercial purpose.

No derivative work:
You can distribute, copy, display or perform the creation but can amend or manipulate the original creation.

Share alike:
You can distribute, copy, display or perform the creation but if a derivative production is made, it must be released under the same license.

If you produced a piece of art and you would like to protect under a Creative Commons license, you need to generate a page listing you condition and a piece of code that you embed in your web site if so.
Go to http://creativecommons.org/license/ and enter you condition to obtain your own license.
